The many benefits of outdoor blinds

Many people think blinds are only a fixture for indoor spaces. But there are specially made blinds and awnings designed for outdoor spaces. This increases the amount of livable space and can transform a backyard into an area prime for accommodating family and friends.

In addition to the expected protection from the sun and weather, outdoor blinds provide a number of benefits:

  • Increased energy efficiency
  • Improved privacy and light control
  • Enhanced sun and rain protection
  • Maximized outdoor space usage
  • Boosted aesthetic appeal
  • Increased protection from insects
  • Improved comfort for outdoor seating

Outdoor blinds in all shapes and sizes

When it comes to adding privacy and protection to your outdoor spaces, there are a number of different options for you to choose from. Some of the most popular are pleated patio shades, which can offer a shield from the sun and rain without a permanent roof. This solution can be extended or retracted based on your need and the time of year.

Zip Screens are another way to add style and shade to your space. They’re specially designed for outside use and are a great alternative to shutters. With Zip screens, you can make your outdoor patio a year-round area by adding walls of protection with a completely sealed system.

There are also a variety of awnings to choose from including, folding arm, fixed guide, and auto awnings. Each of these options provides protection from the sun and rain while also shading the ground below to make it more comfortable for homeowners and visitors alike.

Building a new home? Here’s why you should consider Smart Blinds

Are outdoor blinds difficult to install?

Since they come in such a wide variety of styles, it’s fair to assume that outdoor blinds will vary when it comes to installation. For most installs, especially where motorisation is involved, it’s best to leave it to the experts and allow a professional to hang or install your blinds. For someone with years of experience working with awnings and zip screens, the installation itself shouldn’t be a challenge.

What the install could be is time consuming. Most installs can take the better part of a day depending on the size of your materials and the number of panels involved.

How much do outdoor blinds cost?

Outdoor blinds are an economic way to turn an outdoor space into a viable living space year-round. What style you choose will dictate the cost, but you can also keep in mind that adding outdoor blinds or awnings will also increase the value of your home. Buyers in Melbourne are always looking for ways to maximize their living space, and creating outdoor spaces that dazzle is one way to appeal to the masses.

To help you budget, here are some of the average prices for the most common outdoor blinds and shades.

StyleAverage Cost per Window
Zip Screens$1,100 – $1,500
Folding arm awning$2,500 – $7,500
Fixed guide awning$1,500 – $5,000
Auto awnings$2,700 – $6,000

What to look for in a window treatment provider

The idea that all blinds are the same is simply false. Not only do they come in different styles and types, but different brands are going to reflect different levels of build quality. You’ll want to look for a provider who works with the best brands and priorities quality to ensure that you have furnishings that are designed to last.

Experience is going to be key since anyone you are willing to trust with your blinds’ installation should be well-versed in the nuances of the installs. Outdoor blinds require a skilled hand to be sure that everything is leveled, sealed, and operating as expected for years to come. You can also look at reviews of different providers to get a sense of how customers have fared with them in the past.

Warranties are also a big talking point when you’re choosing a window treatment provider. Consider that you’ll want to be clear on what warranties are available from the manufacturer on the products you choose. You’ll also want to ask about a workmanship guarantee in case anything should go wrong with the installation. Any vendor that doesn’t stand by their work should probably be skipped over.

Frequently Asked Questions About Outdoor Blinds in Melbourne

That depends on how you option them out. Most blinds, shades, and awnings made for the outdoors come in a variety of mechanisms. Manual operation is often a cheaper alternative and includes pulley or cord systems. There are also options for motorisation and automatic retraction if that’s something you’re interested in.
You shouldn’t have to worry too much about maintenance when it comes to your outdoor window furnishings and awnings. If you’re concerned about dust or dirt build up, you can generally wipe them down with a soft cloth and a bit of water.
Not all of them are waterproof, but most are water resistant. You’ll want to check with the specific blinds or awnings you have in mind to make sure you choose the material that best suits your needs.

Have had Delux Blinds do a couple of installs in our house now. The fact that we had them back a second time says it all! Great service, quality and price. Excellent follow up on timelines and execution of appointments - unlike a lot of other trades, if they say they will be there, they actually will! A breath of fresh air. Would happily recommend to friends and family.

Just purchased and installed 14 internal blockout roller blinds (12 being motorised) thru Delux Blinds of Ringwood East, and couldn't be happier with the result. Facing east with full morning sun into the living room, and late afternoon sun on the back of the house needed some careful design but some innovative thinking by Delux solved the problem. The 10,5 mt living room window wall with 2 stacker doors was tricky but overcome using 9 separate drops face fitted and motorised in 3 sections with interlinked drops. This allows greater flexibility of use, and reduced the cost considerably. The drops allign with the window mullions so while a minimal gap cannot be avoided between drops no direct sunlight penetrates. A quick word on the motorisation - this is a fabulous way to go for ease and simplicity of operation and highly recommended. We find the batteries in our earlier blinds lasting over a year between charges and the blind can actually indicate the charge level! The overall effect is fabulous and a testament to Delux Blinds who went to great lengths to ensure we got exactly what we were seeking. Great effort guy's thankyou. We'll be back for more. Friendly, great service, timely appointments and all throughout lockdowns! Timeline estimations were spot on. Super communication right down to their app telling us how many minutes away they were. Had a little error with one of the blinds, but fixed it quick smart and prioritised us to get the job done. Highly recommended. We wanted to shop local for our new property and I'm glad we did.
